Bio/Mission

R.V. Branham was born & grew up in Calexico, California, a border town, where everyone spoke Spanish, Czech, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Mandarin, Yiddish, &/or even English — & the altar boys skin-popped — so much so that Calexico was on record as having the highest per-capita heroin overdose rate in North America. Until the early '90s, when he located to Portland Oregon, he lived in Ellay, specifically the South Bay area, with occasional forays to NY, Canada, Mexico & Australia. His first language: Spanish, his second: James Joyce. He has attended U.S.C., El Camino College, Cal State Dominguez Hills, & Michigan State University, where he's variously studied Radiology, Journalism & Playwrighting, & has been in writing workshops with Beyond Baroque, John Rechy, Sheila Finch, John Hill, A. J. Budrys, & others. His day jobs have included: technical typist, photo-researcher, asst. x-ray technician, interpreter, social worker, & Treasury Dept. terrorist. His short stories & novellas has been published in magazines such as 2 Gyrls Quarterly, Back Brain Recluse, Téma, Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine, Midnight Graffiti, & have been collected in such anthologies as Full Spectrum 3, Drawn to Words, Mother Sun, & several Gardner Dozois anthologies, & translated into Croatian, German, Japanese & Spanish; his plays, Bad Teeth, and Matt & Geof Go Flying, have been performed in staged readings in Los Angeles & Portland. He has translated Laura Esquivel into English & several of Croatian poet Tomica Bajsic’s poems into Spanish. Back in the day he co-hosted a floating aether-den (it was the 70’s). An occasional printer’s devil since the age of ten, he has also worked for local indie newsweeklies & biweeklies such as Portland Metrozine & Paperback Jukebox. He is the founder & editor of Gobshite Quarterly, & the author of a 90-language dictionary of insult & invective, obscenity & blasphemy, Curse + Berate in 69+ Languages (published by Soft Skull), which occasioned a literary spat between Canadian & American linguists, & edited & co-published a bilingual edition of Luisa Valenzuela’s Deathcats/El gato eficaz with Publication Studio. He has a daily blog, give us This Day our Daily Curse < http://giveusthisdayourdailycurse.blogspot.com/ >, &is currently completing several 190+-language dictionary projects exploring the sacred & the profane, & preparing a Gobshite Quarterly omnibus or two to be co-published with Publication Studio. And then there are other anthologies, & various personal fiction, & non-fiction projects. No rest for wicked sons-of-bitches.
