MORE ABOUT THE COURSE:
It’s designed for writers who have moved beyond the just-started-writing-a-novel phase but have not yet reached the end of a project. Not to dis short story writers or memoirists, we are focusing on the unique qualities of the novel form. Enrollment is limited to 10 writers per course section.

Two tracks are offered: theory and practice. Writers will be encouraged to participate in both tracks.

THEORY: Each Monday, the facilitator posts a new blog entry on one of the topic areas listed in the syllabus. In a password-protected, private forum setting, participants work out the knots in applying theory to their writing. Students also post blog entries of their own related to the course.

PRACTICE: In a public platform, writers are encouraged to post sections or full manuscripts of novels-in-progress on the Red Lemonade site with workshop mates commenting on each other’s work. Upon request, the course facilitator will provide personalized and private feedback on workshop participants’ writing samples outside the Red Lemonade community.

Writers can participate in one or both tracks. The level of engagement is up to you. The more you put into the experience, the more you’ll take away. The course concludes with a plan for next steps.

ABOUT THE FACILITATOR

Richard Melo is the author of two novels, including Happy Talk (forthcoming from Red Lemonade in Fall 2012) and Jokerman 8 (Soft Skull Press). He’s on Mediabistro’s list of best online writers and has written more than 100 book reviews appearing in Publishers Weekly, The Oregonian, and The Believer.
